NIIOS Mission

The Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (NIIOS) aims to be a knowledge center in the field of Ophthalmology. The NIIOS facilitates six sections of expertise supporting each others activities.

The NIIOS R&D section focusses on the design, development and/or modification of medical devices and surgical techniques. Flaws of current techniques are analysed and new surgical concepts may be introduced to eliminate these flaws. Please see our portfolio.

For each invention, preferably an external manufacturer is contracted or the product may be produced by Hippocratech Inc and Hippocratech Surgical Inc

The NIIOS Consultancy section advises on protection of intellectual property rights of new surgical concepts, and supports the CE- or FDA approval process for new medical devices. Upon request, this section also can provide the framework for ISO accreditations of various medical organisations.

Most concepts are developed to improve or facilitate eyebanking or clinical ophthalmology, and are introduced through Amnitrans Eyebank or Melles CorneaClinic.

To inform other health care professionals about 'state of the art' eyebanking, clinical ophthalmology, and in particular new surgical concepts, various didactic courses and presentations are organized by the NIIOS Education section each year.

The integration of R&D, manufacturing, tissue-preservation, clinical and educational activities enables the NIIOS to frontier within the field of ophthalmology, and in particular corneal surgery. In-house R&D and collaborations with universities around the world provide a continuous flow of know-how used to upgrade our 'standard operating procedures', to update our continued training program for all employees, to gain access to the latest equipment to support laboratory- and clinical procedures and to improve our educational program.

Since the start of the organisation in 2000, surgical concepts of the NIIOS were broadcasted in over 150 TV and radio interviews (eg. CNN, ABC, NBC, BBC World, Discovery Channel) and in more than 500 publications in scientific and non-scientific journals (eg. Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financieel Dagblad, NRC Handelsblad, Volkskrant). Over 250 foreign corneal surgeons visited the NIIOS educational courses in Rotterdam.
